L-leg trolley gantry crane

Structure and operating principle

An L-leg gantry crane uses a travelling trolley for lifting and cross travel.

A gantry carries its bridge on legs and travelling end assemblies, transferring wheel reactions to the supporting track and foundation. The lifting unit moves across the bridge; the permitted hook envelope depends on the leg layout and any approved cantilever.

Application and selection

Used for material preparation, fabrication and stockyard transfer where a floor-level crane route can be reserved. The layout must account for vehicles crossing the track, stored goods and the space required around moving legs.

Working method

1. Before work, authorised personnel confirm the load and its centre of gravity, the permitted machine configuration, the route and receiving position. Complete the checks specified for the equipment, verify protective functions by the approved method and stop if a defect affects safe operation.

2. Check the track and travel corridor before positioning the lifting unit above the load. Lift clear of supports, transfer without contact with the legs or stacks, and lower at the prepared position. For outdoor service, follow the machine-specific wind and parking procedure.

3. After the task, place the load on stable supports and leave the equipment in its prescribed safe state. Record faults and abnormal events. Maintenance or jam clearance requires secure isolation of relevant energy, including stored hydraulic, pneumatic and gravitational energy.

Precautions and maintenance

Confirm ground and runway capacity, wheel clearances and the approved working area before use. Do not infer outdoor, storm, seismic or corrosive-environment suitability from the gantry shape; stopping wind speeds and anchoring arrangements are configuration-specific.

Inspection frequency, wear/discard criteria, lubrication, brake adjustment and replacement parts follow the supplied instructions and applicable local requirements. Only competent personnel may maintain the equipment; return to service follows the prescribed checks.
